Granite City Brass
The members of the Granite City Brass Quintet all reside close to the Mississippi River. All of the members are currently or have been performers with the St. Cloud Symphony Orchestra. They perform in other musical organizations such as the Lake Wobegon®Brass Band, Minnesota Centre Chorale Orchestra, Amadeus Chamber Symphony, local and Minneapolis jazz and community bands and a variety of other professional organizations. All have private, school or university teaching experience in music and all have degrees in music or music education.
Steve Hogenson – Trumpets, piccolo trumpet, flu gel horn: Steve is a graduate of Concordia College in Moorhead, has 20 plus years of teaching experience in Minnesota, Texas and Idaho, is a lead trumpet player with big bands in the Twin Cities and has played in virtually every kind of ensemble at every level. Plays Trumpets, piccolo trumpet, flugel horn in the bands, jazz bands and orchestras and is a former second trumpet In the St. Cloud Symphony orchestra. He has considerable experience as a lead player in jazz and rock bands in the Twin Cities and locally.
Heidi Martinson – Trumpets and flugel horn: Heidi is the Sauk Rapids-Rice Middle School Band director and has lots of playing experience in chamber music, jazz bands, concert bands, orchestras and as a church musician. She has a BS in music education from St. Cloud State and an MS from St. Mary’s University.
Patty Diederichs – Horn: Patty has a BM performance degree from St. Cloud State University and a MM degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She has played professionally in the Madison and Chicago areas and recently returned from the Washington, D.C. area where she performed for several years. She is principal horn in the St. Cloud Symphony Orchestra and is an active player with local professional productions and organizations.
Kenton Frohrip – Tenor Trombone: Kenton is a Professor Emeritus at St. Cloud State University where he taught for 31 years. He has played in every kind of group imaginable and currently plays in the Lake Wobegon Brass Band and the Granite City Brass Quintet. He retired several years ago from the St. Cloud Symphony Orchestra after 26 years as principal and section trombone. In addition he is active as a volunteer in various arts organization. He holds a Ph.D. from the U of M.
John Ingman - Tuba: John has a BS in Music from the University of Oregon, where he played in the band and several diverse groups, including Classical, Dixieland, Polka, and even some Rock and Roll. He has lived in the St. Cloud area for 5 years and plays in several local ensembles including principal tuba and educational work with the St. Cloud Symphony Orchestra
